Chapter 8 – Danny

Danny cradled Marissa's waist and led her to the railing overlooking the great expanse of sea. They floated out so far that the shore was no longer in view, literally just a space for the two of them, not a soul to disturb their date. He reveled in the feel of her waist, so slender and petite beneath his powerful hands that, while he was afraid that one wrong move might snap her in two, he couldn't restrain the desire pumping through his blood. Not for much longer, at least.

They propped themselves up against the railing. With the sun having completely set during their ride out, the moon now reflected off the gentle, rolling waves. "Wow, we're far enough away from the city that we can see the stars out here. It's been so long ..." Marissa said and leaned in closer to Danny, just a bit.

Maybe it was on accident, meant to make it easier for her to look at the view, but Danny tightened his hold on her regardless, not letting her slip back into her original position.

"It's why I love coming this far out," Danny whispered, his voice a little huskier than intended, but he loved the way she reacted. "Dining at sea, beneath the stars ... not always a feasible escape, but for special nights like this, it's always worth the time it takes."

Marissa stiffened a little, but she also brushed up closer against his side. The warmth of her there kicked Danny's heartbeat up a notch, and though he'd previously been aware of each movement she made, every breath she took, now he felt it all against him. The burning need to feel the touch of her skin against his, her lips against his, was almost unbearable.

"I'm surprised you're not out here every night," she said.

"I would be if it made sense. I work out here sometimes just to get away from the city. But it can be lonely, even if it's beautiful. I don't think turning Saint Martha into a party boat is a viable alternative. To spend time out here every day ... I'd need a special someone."

Marissa tilted her head in his direction. "I'm sure you'll find someone."

When Danny had said that, his intentions, even to himself, hadn't been clear. But now that he was here with Marissa, and the words were lost to the ocean before them, he wondered if it was possible for Marissa to be that special someone. There was something undeniably perfect about her, something that kept drawing him back to her even when she pushed him away.

The first time they'd met, Danny saw Marissa as a challenge, a woman who opposed him, whom he wanted to charm into a single night in a shared bed. But since then, his feelings had become more complicated than that. Every fiber of his being wanted to bed her, but the same desire also wanted to whisk her away and make her his completely.
